We need to develop and disseminate an entirely new paradigm and practice of collaboration that supersedes the traditional silos that have divided governments, philanthropies and private enterprises for decades and replace it with networks of partnerships working together to create a globally prosperous society.

I love quotes. When someone nails it, why try to recreate it…just quote it.
So, what are we really getting into here?
- Retaining talent in our communities
- Academic freedom
- Tenure
- Syllabus ownership
- Workforce development
- The purpose of higher eduction
- Academic capitalism
- Economic drivers
Wow. If you want to create a robust discussion between faculty, administration, industry, and community, that list of topics will do it for sure.
This topic is the reason I created this blog site. There is a lot going on in the world. However, I live and work in a space which can contribute to thought leadership and discussion. If we can advance the chances of good collaboration occurring, our children and their children will be much better off.
So, some beginning dialogue. (most recent posts on this topic are below this intro).
At the most simple level, below are a few reasons collaboration is difficult. Following that simplistic intro are some of my most recent posts about this subject. I would love to hear your thoughts!
- Language
- Measures
- Motivators
Language

When I was in industry, regardless of my location (PA, FL, NC, IN), spring was never January. However, spring in January would have been nice while in PA and IN.
As long as I have been in higher education, fall has always been August. Cooler weather in August would have been nice anyplace (I love fall).
This is a simple example of language differences. Industry and recruiters need to learn higher education language to be able to effectively engage.
Measures

Industry
Move quick to gain market share. Make strategy changes quickly and implement them before the competition. COMPETITION
Higher Education
Curriculum changes by committee, then approval by the department, then the college, the university, then…then…then… COMMUNITY PROCESSES
Motivators
What motivates an organized anarchy like higher education? See my thoughts in the paper posted below.
What motivates industry? Survival, growth, market value, shareholders, risk of competition, are only a few.
There are clear differences in motivation between higher education and industry.
The posts below are related to Industry and Higher Education Collaborations. I hope you enjoy and engage in this discussion. And that we are all motivated to do great work in this space.
